  Medical: Caucasian . When I was ten or twelve, I visited with my father's parents who lived "in the country" about seven miles from Eldridge, Alabama near New River. It was in the country! There was no electricity until 1950 and the roads were not paved until about 1957. One summer at my request, we picked a lot of blackberries. I'm not sure if picking or canning the berries was is hottest work. Grandma and I were afraid of snakes and we always kept a long stick or hoe to clear the path and scurry the snakes away before we began picking. Anyway, to seal the tops of the glass jar used to store the berries, Grandma would pass its' inspection with the phase "that's tight as Dick's hat band". I never met Dick and never knew what his hat looked like. These were also the days before electric dishwashers for most households. Dishwashers were the women of the house. Although, the men would ocassionally assume a subservient role of drying the dishes. Like all women of the day, Grandma Beasley had all the work to do she could "shake a stick at". She knew better than to do the same job twice. On rare ocassions I enjoyed the entire family of Grandpa John Allen, III and Grandma Missouri Beasley visiting. After a meal, the ladies of the family gathered used dishes to be washed while the men cut a chew of tobacco or smoked. The term "used" is a key word. Grandma very wisely recognized the unused dishes and exclaimed "that ain't be tetched, there's no need to wash hit". It was promptly returned to the cupboard. It seems there were long periods that we didn't see Grandma and Grandpa. After a big hug, the first thing Grandma would say to me when we did visit was "you've growed since I saw you." Unlike today, people who were somewhat overweight were considered health. Grandma would further brag on one's appearance by saying "you look good and fleshy". We would also visit Aunt Sina on these trips. In exchanging the usuals "how are you? Fine! how are you?" Aunt Sina would not complain, but she would not shay away from a little attention if it was available. Her usual "fine" was "just about like common" or "like common". This is intrepreted to mean, things could be better and I'll be glad to explain in length if you'll listen. My daughter Carol Beth remembers Aunt Sina because Sina gave her Circus Peanut candy when we visited. I enjoyed Aunt Sina's orange cakes! I always enjoyed family reunions with those of my father's family and my mother's family. I can remember there was no swearing, no dirty jokes, and no alcohol present. The term divorce was practically unknown to my youth. Only one of my ten aunts and uncles experienced divorce. Of the Elbert Barnett family, one child of seven experienced divorce and four of nineteen grandchildren. Of the John Allen Beasley, III family no child of three divorced and none of three grandchildren. My father never swore, but he did use a couple of expressions when the wrench he was using to work on his lawnmower would slip or when he hit his thumb instead of a nail with a hammer. "Oh, fiddle sticks", or "Oh, shucks" meant thing weren't going too good. I always wondered what a fiddle stick was. I know a fiddle bow is an instrument used when playing the fiddle (violin). Fiddle sticks? I remember helping my grandfather shuck corn with a hand crank machine that separated the corn from the cobb. I guess enough of this might translated into "oh, shucks"! Concerning family finance, Daddy often said, "you can spend it faster than you can make it". I share this statement with my children and I think they understand the wisdom. Once during his last years, Daddy expressed concern about his teeth wearing and breaking. I replied that he might need a crown or other dental work. He replied, "the replacement parts are never as good as the originals". My dentist agrees with Daddy. The only profound statement I can recall making is "life is a series of suttle changes" and now these expressions are dear to me.
